silk scarves
As the saying goes, you don't know what you don't know. This project is a great example of both that saying and of the value of jumping into an idea without fear.
I had picked up some 60/2 silk during a road trip to Webs in Massachusetts. Who knew fine threads would be different from the knitting yarns I had been weaving with? And the sample in the store was a beautiful advancing twill with a complicated threading. Hey, I have an 8 harness loom! That's all you need, right?
So without fear, I measured my warp with these tiny threads and started warping my Harrisville loom. I referred frequently to my beginning weaving notes and the books I had picked up. Soon enough, I needed to look up how to repair a broken warp thread. None of these hurdles seemed overwhelming, and off I went. I had warped enough for two scarves, one with contrasting weft and one with matching weft. As I wove the first, it seemed like there were some awfully long floats, but, oh well! It didn't occur to me to check my tie-up until I started the second scarf, and sure enough, there was a mistake. I fixed it for the second scarf, but I think the first, pictured here, is still pretty. And it's a great reminder that, even when - or especially when - you don't know what you're doing and don't know enough to be afraid, the result can be beautiful!
